Culturally Competent Therapy
Offering supportive counseling to individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds who want a space where their identity,
experiences, and cultural influences are understood and respected.

A space where you don’t have to explain your culture
To most people of color, the therapy process may be accompanied by an added uncertainty. You may have questions about whether a therapist will actually be able to grasp the cultural expectations, family dynamics, or even experiences that shape your life. Clients often share that it feels easier with a therapist who already gets their cultural context. Coming from a background where therapy wasn’t accepted, I aim to support others navigating mental health struggles without feeling misunderstood or judged.
I have personal experience of living between cultures as a Mexican American therapist who came to the United States undocumented at age 2. I eventually became a citizen in my early 20s. Lots of individuals are raised under the pressure of both being “American” while still holding onto the traditions and the expectations of their culture.
I offer you a space where you don’t have to translate your experiences or explain every cultural reference. Therapy becomes a place where you can simply show up as yourself.

Does this sound familiar?
Many clients seek culturally affirming therapy when their life experiences are deeply connected to culture, identity, and community.
- Feeling caught between cultural expectations and personal goals
- Growing up in a culture that dismisses therapy and mental health while struggling with valid mental health issues
- Having pressure to meet high expectations within your family or community
- Wanting a therapist who understands the importance of cultural identity and lived experiences
- Carrying cultural responsibilities or roles that others may not fully understand

Why culturally affirming therapy?
Cultural identity may influence how we experience emotions, our relationships, and even our expectations. Therapy is an opportunity to discuss those influences openly and create a better vision of yourself and your personal needs.

How I help my clients
Many clients tell me that working with a therapist of color feels different. When someone already understands the cultural experiences, it means you don’t need to spend time explaining why some things matter so deeply.
I was raised in an environment where therapy was rarely discussed, so I know how bold a person can be to seek help. Most people are raised to live with their burdens without speaking out and carrying on their struggle. With a culturally competent therapist, you can experience relief from judgment of needing to go to therapy.
During our sessions, we establish room to address the pressures, expectations, and experiences that may have shaped your life whilst assisting you to progress more clearly with self-compassion and a culturally focused approach.

What does culturally affirming therapy mean?
It entails therapy that recognizes and respects the role of culture, identity and lived experiences in the development of the mental health of an individual.
Can therapy help with cultural or family expectations?
Therapy can help you build your confidence when encountering microaggressions in social and work environments. Through therapy, you and I can discuss those expectations and find a way to work around them while still honoring the needs of your individual self.
Do I need to share everything about my culture?
Only what feels comfortable. Therapy is a space where you can share at your own pace.
What if my family doesn’t believe in therapy?
Many clients come from backgrounds where therapy was rarely discussed. Seeking support is still a valid and meaningful step for your well-being.
Is culturally affirming therapy only for one cultural group?
No. This approach welcomes individuals from many cultural backgrounds who want their experiences to be understood within the context of their identity. Many minority cultures share overlapping values and beliefs.
Can therapy help me balance my cultural identity and personal goals?
Yes. Sessions focus on finding ways to honor both your personal values and cultural background.
What happens if I’ve never attended therapy before?
That’s okay, many of my clients are attending therapy for the first time. I’ll make sure to answer any questions you may have and go at a comfortable pace.
